Even Mad Max: Fury Road, held up constantly as the gold standard of practical filmmaking, used plenty of digital work to extend its sandstorms, remove safety cables, and paint out modern infrastructure hiding just outside frame. The real distinction directors care about isn't practical versus digital, it's foundation versus decoration. Build the stunt, the set, or the creature for real first, and CGI becomes a polishing tool — cleaning up wires, extending a landscape, erasing a crane. Build nothing real and try to manufacture the entire moment from scratch in a computer, and you get the weightless, consequence-free spectacle audiences have grown tired of.
